שלמה דובנא איז געבוירן געוואָרן אין דער שטאָט [[דובנא]], וואָהלין (דעמאָלט אין פּוילן, היינט אין אוקראַינע). ווען ער איז אַלט געווען פערצן יאָר, האָט ער חתונה געהאַט מיט דער טאָכטער פון דעם תּלמודיסט רב שמחה בן יהושע פון וואָלאָזשין. נאָכן לערנען אין וואָהלין, איז ער געפאָרן קיין גאַליציע, וואו ער האָט יאָרן לאַנג שטודירט דקדוק און פּרשנות ביי רב שלמה מחעלמאַ. זיין רבי האָט אים פאַראַנטוואָרט מיט דער רעוויזיע פון דעם ספר "שערי נעימה" אויף די טעמי המקרא, וואָס איז געדרוקט געוואָרן אין 1766.<br />

אין יאָר 1767 איז ער געקומען קיין אַמסטערדאַם, צוגעצויגן צוליב די דאָרטיגע רייכע ספרים-זאַמלונגען. אין 1772 האָט ער זיך באַזעצט אין בערלין, וואו ער האָט זיך מפרנס געווען ווי אַ פּריוואַטער לערער פאַר די קינדער פון מענדעלסאָן און דעם פינאַנצירער דניאל איציג. ער איז געוואָרן אַ נאָנטער פריינד און שותּף מיט מענדעלסאָן אין די ערשטע יאָרן פון דער השכּלה.<br />
