שלמה אבן גבירול איז געבוירן אין מאַלאַגאַ, שפּאַניע, בערך אין די יאָרן 1021 אָדער 1022. זיין פאָטער, יהודה, איז געווען פון קאָרדאָבע, אָבער די משפּחה האָט געמוזט פלייען פון דאָרט צוליב אַ מלחמה צען יאָר פריער, און זיך באַזעצט אין סאַראַגאָסאַ איידער זיי זענען אריבערגעפאָרן קיין מאַלאַגאַ. אבן גבירול איז געוואָרן אַ יתום אין אַ יונגן עלטער, זיינע עלטערן זענען געשטאָרבן בשעת ער איז נאָך געווען אַ קינד, און ער האָט נישט געהאַט נאָענטע קרובים. ער האָט געמוזט אַליין לערנען די תּורה און געפונען טרייסט אין תּלמוד-לימוד.<br />

ער האָט באַקומען אַ ברייטע בילדונג אין העברעיש, אַראַביש און גריכישער ליטעראַטור, פילאָסאָפיע, וויסנשאַפט, אַסטראָנאָמיע און געאָמעטריע. אבן גבירול האָט אָנגעהויבן שרייבן פּאָעזיע אין זיינע יונגעלע יאָרן. שוין מיט 16 יאָר האָט ער געשריבן זיין באַרימט ליד "אַזהרוֹת", וואָס באַהאַנדלט די 613 מיצוות.<br />

זיין געזונט איז געווען שוואַך, ער איז געווען קליין פון וואוקס און אָפּשוידערלעך אומשיין. ער האָט געליטן פון אַ כראָנישער הויט-קראַנקייט (מעגלעך לופּוס וואולגאַריס), וואָס האָט אים איבערגעלאָזט פארביטערט און אין כּסדרדיקע שמערצן. זיין כאראַקטער איז אָפט געווען אַרראָגאַנט, ער האָט געהאַט אַ "כעסדיקן רוּח", וואָס האָט אים אָפט געפירט צו קאָנפליקטן מיט איינפלוסרייכע מענטשן פון זיין צייט און מיט דער געזעלשאַפט בכלל. ער האָט זיך אָפט באַקלאָגט אויף זיינע קרענק, זיין מאַנגל אין סימפּאַטישע פריינד, און אויף זיין פעלן פון אנערקענונג.<br />

ער איז באַשיצט געוואָרן פון יקותיאל אבן חסן, אַ באַקאַנטער אידישער פּאָליטישער פיגור אין סאַראַגאָסאַ. ווען יקותיאל איז דערמאָרדעט געוואָרן אין 1039, האָט אבן גבירול קאָמפּאָנירט אַ באַרימטע עלעגיע פון איבער 200 פערזן. נאָך דעם, ווי זיין מוטער איז געשטאָרבן אין 1045, האָט אבן גבירול פאַרלאָזט סאַראַגאָסאַ, מעגלעך צוליב זיין קריטיק אויף באַוווּסטע מיטגלידער פון דער אידישער קהילה. ער איז געשטיצט געוואָרן פון שמואל הנגיד, אָבער זיי האָבן זיך שפּעטער געקריגט.<br />

די גענויע דאַטע פון זיין טויט איז אומקלאָר, מיט פארשידענע מקורות וואָס געבן יאָרן צווישן 1057 און 1070. לויט איין לעגענדע איז ער דערמאָרדעט געוואָרן פון אַ מוסלמענער, וואָס איז געווען אים מקנא, און באַגראָבן אונטער אַ פייגנבוים. דער בוים האָט געגעבן אויסערגעוויינטלעך זיסע פרוכטן, וואָס האָט געפירט צו דער אַנטדעקונג פון זיינע רעשטן.<br />

אבן גבירול איז געווען דער ערשטער אידישער פילאָסאָף אין שפּאַניע. זיינע פילאָסאָפישע ווערק זענען באַאיינפלוסט געוואָרן פון ניי-פּלאַטאָניזם, פּיטאַגאָראַיזם, און איסלאַמישע און אידישע מיסטישע מקורות. פּלאַטאָ איז דער איינציקער פילאָסאָף, וואָס ווערט דערמאָנט בפירוש אין זיין הויפּטווערק "מקור חיים".<br />

===מקור חיים (Fons Vitae)===<br />
זיין וויכטיקסטע פילאָסאָפישע אָפּהאַנדלונג, "מקור חיים", איז געשריבן געוואָרן אין אַראַביש אונטערן נאָמען "יאַנבו' אַל-חיאַת" (Yanbu' al-Hayat). דער אָריגינעלער אַראַבישער טעקסט איז פאַרפאַלן, אָבער עס איז גאַנץ פארבליבן אין אַ לאַטיינישער איבערזעצונג "Fons Vitae" פון 1150. די איבערזעצונג איז געמאַכט געוואָרן אין טאָלעדאָ דורך דאָמיניקוס גונדיסאַלינוס און יאָהאַננעס היספּאַנוס (אבן דאַוד). שפּעטער, אין 13טן יאָרהונדערט, האָט שם טוב אבן פאַלאַקיראַ געשריבן אַ קיצור פונעם ווערק אויף העברעיש.<br />

"מקור חיים" איז געשריבן אין פאָרעם פון אַ דיאַלאָג צווישן אַ לערער און זיין תּלמיד. די הויפּט טעזיס פונעם ווערק איז, אַז אַלעס וואָס עקזיסטירט באַשטייט פון חומר און פאָרם ("וניווערסאַלע הילאָמאָרפיזם"). לויט דעם ווערק, פליסט אַלעס עקזיסטירנדיקע פון גאָט, וואָס איז דער לעצטער קוואַל פון אַלע זייַענדיקע זאַכן – דער "קוואַל פון לעבן". דער חומר און די פאָרם זענען די גרונטשטיינער פון דער עקזיסטענץ, צוזאַמען מיט גאָטס רצון. דער פילאָסאָף האָט אויך אונטערגעשטראָכן די באַדייטונג פון גאָטס רצון ווי דער אינסטרומענט און מיטל פון בריאה.<br />

די מענטשליכע נשמה, לויט אבן גבירול, האָט געהאַט וויסן ביים באַשאַפן ווערן, אָבער האָט עס פאַרלוירן ווען זי איז באַהעפט געוואָרן צום קערפּער. זי מוז זיך ווידער דערמאָנען אין דעם וויסן דורך חושישע דערפאַרונג, און עס איז גוט פאַר דער נשמה צו זיך אָפּקערן פון פיזישע זאַכן און זיך פאַרטיפן אין אינטעלעקטועלע, כּדי צו דערגרייכן איר ענדגילטיקן ציל פון זיך אומקערן צום העכערן, אינטעלעקטועלן וועלט.<br />

אבן גבירול האָט אויך געשריבן "תיקון מידות הנפש" (The Improvement of the Moral Qualities) ארום 1045, אַן עטישע אָפּהאַנדלונג, וואָס איז געשריבן אין אַראַביש ("Kitāb Iṣlāḥ al-Akhlāq") און איבערגעזעצט אויף העברעיש דורך יהודה אבן תּבון אין 1167. דאָס ווערק פאַרגלייכט די פאַראַלעלן צווישן דעם וניווערס (מאַקראָקאָסמאָס) און דעם מענטשן (מיקראָקאָסמאָס). ער האָט אַנטוויקלט אַן אָריגינעלע טעאָריע, וווּ 20 פּערזענלעכקייטס-אייגנשאַפטן ווערן צוגעשריבן צו די פינף חושים.<br />

אבן גבירולס פילאָסאָפיע איז אין ערשט געווען ווייניק אנערקענט צווישן אידישע דענקער. דאָס איז מעגלעך געווען צוליב דעם מאַנגל פון ספּעציפיש אידישע רעפערענצן אין "מקור חיים" און די דאָמינאַנץ פון אַריסטאָטעלישער פילאָסאָפיע אין דער אידישער וועלט פון דער צייט. אָבער עס האָבן אים יאָ באַאיינפלוסט משה אבן עזרא, אברהם אבן עזרא און יוסף אבן צדיק. אברהם אבן דאַוד, אַן אַריסטאָטעליאַנער, האָט שארף קריטיקירט אבן גבירולס מיינונגען, באַשולדיקנדיג אים אין פילאָסאָפירן אָן אַכטונג אויף אידישע רעליגיעזע פאָדערונגען. מיימאָנידעס, אַ שפּעטערדיקער פילאָסאָף, האָט געבויט אויף אבן גבירולס געדאַנקען, אָבער מיט אַן אינטעגראַציע פון אַריסטאָטעלישע פּרינציפּן.<br />

אבן גבירול איז געווען אַ פרוכטבאַרער פּאָעט, וואָס האָט געשריבן סיי הייליקע, סיי וועלטליכע לידער, אין העברעיש און אַראַביש. מען האָט אים אנערקענט ווי דער גרעסטער פּאָעט פון זיין צייט, אפילו פון זיינע קריטיקער. זיין פּאָעזיע איז באַצייכנט דורך אַ ריינע תּנ"כישע העברעישע שפּראַך און אַ לינגוויסטישע ווירטואָזיטעט. ער האָט פּאָפּולעריזירט דעם שטרענגן אַראַבישן מעטער אין דער העברעישער פּאָעזיע, וואָס איז איינגעפירט געוואָרן דורך דונש בן לבראַט.<br />

זיינע רעליגיעזע פּאָעמעס זענען אַ טייל פון דער תּפילה-סערוויס אין אידישע קהילות איבער דער וועלט. כתר מלכות (די קעניגליכע קרוין) איז זיין מערסט באַרימטע און וויכטיקסטע רעליגיעזע פּאָעמע. זי ווערט רעציטירט היינט צוטאָגס ביי ספרדישע אידן אין יום כּיפּור אָוונט. דאָס ליד איז אַ פילאָסאָפישער טראַקטאַט אין פּאָעטישער פאָרם, וואָס באַשרייבט דעם כּבוד פון גאָט אין סיי דעם מאַטעריעלן, סיי דעם רוחניותדיקן וועלט. עס איז אַ קאָסמאָגראַפיע באַזירט אויף דער פּטאָלעמאַיִשער וניווערס, וואָס שילדערט די אַרופגאַנג פון די פיר עלעמענטן פון דער ערד דורך די ספירות ביז דעם כּסא הכּבוד. די פּאָעמע איז געשריבן אין דער פאָרעם פון סאַדזשאַ (גערימטע, ריטמישע פּראָזע) און אירע פּאָעטישע מעלות זענען מערסטנס מוזיקאַלישע.<br />
